Lake Abbe, on the border between Ethiopia and Djibouti in the Afar Depression, is an endorheic lake fed by the Awash River. Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile River it lies in the Ethiopian Highlands in the north of the country. Some of them are freshwater lakes, but most of the Rift Valley lakes do not have an outlet and are alkaline "soda lakes." The largest are Lake Abaya, Lake Chamo, Lake Zway, and Lake Shala. The highest mountain in Ethiopia is Ras Dashen (4,550 m), a peak in the Semien Mountains in the northern part of the country.Ī series of lakes adorn the Rift Valley. Tullu Dimtu, at 4,377 m, is the highest peak of the Bale range. To the north of the Rift valley is the rugged mass of the Ethiopian Highlands or Western Highlands to the southeast are the Somali Highlands or Eastern Highlands with the Bale Mountains and the Ahmar Mountains. From southwest to northeast, the valley stretches for more than 1,000 km through the country and widens in the northwest into the plains of the Afar Triangle. In the center of the nation is the northern portion of the Great Rift Valley, which separates the country's central highlands.
